what's been done in way of treating him? just pred? how much & how often??
i'd double the dose and feed watered down food every 3 hours and find a ferret vet somewhere. if they're that far away, it wouldn't make sense to drive it as time is definitely of the essence now.
maybe they'd do a phone consult with a vet that's local to you. offer to pay them their usual office visit fee - that may clinch it for them to consult over the phone. if you are there with your local vet, the one on the phone can ask questions and the vet that is right there with the ferret can answer the questions and describe what is being felt during the physical exam and also what is on the screen if an xray or ultrasound is done. blood work results can be faxed over.
good luck!

He passed away last night. We were feeding him every few hours but by the 7pm feeding he just couldn't eat, I was planning to give him double pred but it was a battle just getting his normal dose in, he was on 1ml twice a day.
Joclyn, I don't trust the vet in town to even know what he's feeling with a physical exam, we tried that once in a situation like this and he told me the ferret in question was full of cancer, nothing we could do, she DID have cancer but that wasn't what he was feeling, the "huge lump" he felt was her enlarged spleen and that one ended up having lymphoma and insulinoma, if I hadn't brought her to my vet she would have died of low blood sugar. He didn't do any bloodwork, xrays, nothing, it was ridiculous.

I'm so sorry. I will light his travelling candle, to guide his little paws on to his next great adventure. No pain or fear will cloud his little mind or still his determination, to reach his destination. He will be greeted by many who have gone before, this path is not a lonely one. Exhaustion is now gone, he no longer has to fight. His world is now a land of soft light, gentle breezes and cool waters. I'm sure my Ghenghis will be there to guide him and to show him how to get into trouble as only Ghenghis could. I will also light a candle for you, to heal and to help replace grief with sweet memories. Remember you need only close your eyes and listen to the wind. It will carry the soft voices of our little ones, you need only open your heart and listen. Goodbye, little one, you are so missed ciao

I'm so, so sorry to hear the news. All too often ferrets go through the roller coaster ride between improvement and relapse of issues. It's true hell for their moms I know how hard this has been, but Blackie had a strong will and is now a free spirit dooking and dancing in your heart. -jennifer
