Warning! Word heavy! I type way too much, so I took the emotes out in order to not take up too much room! (except this one!)

1. Where did you first learn about natural diets for ferrets?
I had been previously researching the guinea pigs diet when we thought that's what we were interested in having. I had already been picky about commercial foods (kibble/pellets) for all animals, and knew how to read, interpret, and break down pet food labels. I was getting so picky with pet food, that the more and more I did research, the further away I got from kibble. Not too long after, we were visiting a pet store just to go and have a look, and for the first time, I met ferrets in person! I was in total love. Derek (my bf) said he used to have a friend with a ferret when he was little, and always thought they were the coolest animal. So, I started researching ferrets instead, especially diet (for some reason, I already felt like this was one of the most important aspects of any domestic animals life). I ended up picking EVO ferret kibble and Wysong Ferret Archetypal-1 (closest to raw that I got until I kept digging) as the best commercial diets out there for a ferret. But I never stopped researching. When we got our first two ferrets (Reks and Pandora), we immediately switched them to EVO and Wysong. They loved it! Something about it though wasn't good enough. I finally came across several sites (I don't remember now which ones) that talked about whole prey/raw/natural diets for dogs, cats, and ferrets! I then specifically looked into natural ferret diets. This is how I found this site! I haven't looked back since!
2. Please describe the type of diet you would like assistance in switching your ferret(s) to. Be sure to include if you are interested in feeding whole prey (live or frozen-thawed) and if you are wanting to FULLY switch to a natural diet or PARTIALLY. If you are unsure what kind of diet you want to put your ferrets on, please express that and we can help you find the best type of natural diet for your ferret.
I would like them eating raw from Hare Today, in particular, mostly the whole ground poultry and prey (except chicken). From there, I would like them graduating to eating the course ground varieties of poultry and prey and RMB's for teeth cleaning and jaw exercise. I would also like to include red meats (beef, lamb, venison, etc) in chunk form with crushed eggshells and ground beef organs from Hare Today. Also, I would like to add a small amount of veggies (like 3% or under) to the ground mixes to take the place of fur (I will try to get them eating at least the whole ground rabbit WITH fur after I get them eating it without, and maybe if I'm lucky, the ground whole mice too since it has fur).
3. Why are you interested in switching your ferrets to a natural diet?
Nutrition is the basis of health. Natural diets are the best diet available for any living creature on this planet. It was set up this way. Nothing could be more perfect. I feel I have a responsibility to my ferrets that they get the best of everything so that they live longer, healthier lives.
4. Do you understand that switching your ferret to a natural diet can be a lengthy, arduous process? Its not an overnight switch. It can be a commitment of several weeks or even months. Your HF Mentor will be more then happy to assist you in switchng your ferret(s) to a natural diet, but you need to be equally as commited. If you aren't willing to tough out a potentially lengthy switching process, or if you have major life changes approaching (baby on the way, moving, starting school, getting married/divorced, etc) then it might be a better idea to wait on switching your ferret's diet until you have more time. Are you willing to make the commitment?
Yes! I have plenty of time and commitment to switching them again. The first major time we tried was when the forum was still very new, but I got discouraged because my ferrets would rather starve themselves than eat fresh/frozen raw. I have more confidence about it now.
5. How many ferrets do you currently have? What are their names? Ages? Genders? Do they have any health problems? Are they overweight? Underweight?
Reks - 1.5 years; male; IBD since we got him at 3 months, but it's controlled, otherwise healthy; 2.25 lbs, healthy weight
Pandora (Pan) - 1.5 years; female; chicken sensitivity since we got her because we pinpointed what was making her barf, otherwise healthy; 1.75 lbs, healthy weight
Sari - 1.5 years; female; partially blind since we got her, otherwise healthy; 1.5 lbs, healthy weight
6. What diet do you currently feed your ferrets? (Please include all treats, supplements, etc)
Lets see. Pandora and Reks started on EVO and Wysong Archetypal-1 at 3 months old, and Sari came to us after we started feeding commercial freeze-dried and dehydrated raw. Took out the Wysong because it made Pan barf. Switched them to Ziwipeak (switched between venison, venison and fish, and lamb varieties daily), Stella & Chewy's (switched between beef, duck, chicken, and lamb varieties daily, later cutting out chicken which stopped Pan's barfing), and Wysong Uncanny rehydrated (switched between beef and egg, pheasant and fruit, and seafood varieties as a nighttime meal daily - also known as ferret crack!). We usually add either generic fish oil, Vivify (emu oil), or olive oil to their Wysong Uncanny. They will eat all three types straight from a syringe or spoon, too! They have never had ferretone, but the fatty acids I use are kind of like their ferretone. They don't like sweet stuff anyways! We also now add 500 mg taurine to their Ziwipeak/S&C mix. We sometimes add canned pumpkin (which they love!) or squash baby food (they like this too) to the Wysong Uncanny. Lately, I have just been buying Ziwipeak so that I had enough to buy them Hare Today. I am planning on buying some more Wysong Uncanny before or during the switch.
7. Have you ever tried to switch your ferrets to a natural diet in the past? If yes, what happened?
To many times to count! The first time was when we just had Reks and Pan. They were eating EVO and Wysong Archetypal-1 at the time. We signed up for a mentor on this forum when it was still pretty new. My mentor ended up being Giuli. I still apologize for my disappearance because I got discouraged when Reks starved himself when we tried the cold turkey method. The second time was when we switched them to Ziwipeak, S&C, and Wysong Uncanny which was total cake. Sari started off on this mix when we got her (she was previously eating Marshell's at Petco). Then I wanted to add more moisture to their diet (this is one reason I was feeding Wysong Uncanny). So, I tried switching them to Nature's Variety and Primal frozen raw by mixing with their "dry" raw (bad idea btw). Then tried mixing small amount of it (about 1/2 oz) into their Wysong Uncanny, which at first, wouldn't eat it, then after a couple times at it as if it weren't in there. Reks on the other hand didn't like it at all in there. He did eat it, but only if I spoon fed him. I finally got him to where he was eating it on his own with the floof girls by bringing the spoon closer and closer to the bowl until he was eating out of the bowl itself. This was my most successful attempt, but then I decided to try Hare Today instead since it was whole ground (not just portions ground together), and I knew the source and care of the animals. Since we got their Hare Today order Thursday (Oct. 8), we have tried mixing the rabbit (about 1 oz) with about 1 oz Ziwipeak. They were avoiding it like the plague until they realized that there was still Ziwipeak in there with it! I would give them a fresh batch of this every 6-8 hours, but now I'm almost out of rabbit...about 1/2 lb left. I also have whole ground pheasant, duck, turkey, white fish, and mice! Also, for later, I have 5 lbs beef trim from hare today as well. They have been eating it (more and more each serving), but really trying to avoid eating pieces with more of the rabbit stuck to it! I definitely need some help on other switching methods or even helping me through using the Wysong Uncanny method which I know will work, just don't know where to go from there.
8. What additional information about yourself or your ferrets would you like to share?
Reks, Pandora, and Sari are marshell ferrets. We were at a store buying supplies to get ready for ferrets (we were planning on adopting from S.A.F.E.), but when we got there, they had ferrets (which they never have at this particular store)! We had an instant connection with two in particular, a sable mitt boy (whom we named Reks after Derek's nickname/character name in video games) and a little DEW girl with some silver guard hairs on her back and top of her head (whom we named Pandora because she reminds me of a tough explorer like Laura Croft from Tomb Raider). We thought we were ready for ferrets, but boy did we learn a lot in a short amount of time! We both read the Ferrets for Dummies book which apparently wasn't enough! we still lived in a college dorm (where you can't have pets), but we were moving out in a month, and our roommate thought they were cute!
A few months later, we went to Petco to buy litter and cleaning spray, which we always go over and glance at the ferrets just to look. That's when we met a cute, VERY little (not because she was young) chocolate blaze. I'm not at all a fan of how Petco houses ferrets (no beds/hammocks; sleep, eat, and poop in the same area; poor ventilation since it's a round-shaped aquarium type thing). There were 6 ferrets in there, and she was the only girl. She seemed as though she was the runt of the litter (if those were her brothers) because of her size compared to the others. Even though she was small, she had HUGE fat pads on both sides of her belly. She would get pushed out of the way and picked on by the boys in there with her. They all reeked! She had almost no muscle mass. At the time, we thought she was going to be bought by the time we were ready for her to come with us. Derek said "if she is still here in November, we'll get her." Poor little girl and her brothers were not sold for almost 4 months (they had been there since they were 3 months)! We finally did buy her to get her out of that situation. We fell in love with her when we met her and felt as though it was fate that she was still there! We went to get her out of the cage, and she wouldn't come to one of the staff members trying to get her out. I said "can I try?" I put my hand in there and said "hey little one, we're here to take you home." She looked up at us for a good 5 seconds, and walked right up to my arm and put her paws on my hand like she was saying "I'm ready!" She would latch on for dear life whenever we would pick her up. We weren't sure why yet (now we know she's partially blind).
When we brought her home, she definitely didn't know how to be a ferret! Pandora LOVED her! She would walk up to her and start smelling her ears and grooming her as if she was her kid! Sari would just sit there and stare off. She didn't even know how to sleep in a bed! She would end up at the bottom of the cage and sleep in the litter! She didn't have enough strength from the lack of exercise for so long, and the fact that she was overweight at just a pound! We didn't bother buying the marshells food, she took to Ziwipeak right away! She wouldn't play when we let them out, just sit there and stare at the others and us with a shocked look on her face all the time. She would also just drag herself around as if she didn't know how to use her legs! Long story short, she now has muscle mass, her goofy air-headed personality came out, and she is now a healthy 1.5 lbs and not overweight! She's extremely clumsy, loves playing fetch, and she is a big dooker! She is also very sweet and loves giving kisses. She will follow Pan around everywhere, and if she sees Pan doing something, she has to do it too (she usually fails). She has gotten her head stuck before in the side door crack when she saw Pan go right through! She was chocking to death, but luckily we saw it all happen, and Derek pushed her head down to try to get her out. As soon as she was free, she started doing a weasel war dance as if nothing happened! Favorite stash items: ANY kind of bag (especially ziplock bags whether they are empty or not!) and small stuffed toys (like the felt meat pack set from Etsy).
Reks acts like a tough guy, but is the biggest scardy-fert ever, and is the first to run away from the vacuum! He's also a sweetheart, and will lay on your chest when he's sleepy, and the next minute be wrestling with us and the others! He likes pestering Pan like brothers do, and she starts hissing at him when she isn't having it! Reks is a great climber, and loves getting up high! Also, loves chasing us humans! He is also one of the most handsome ferrets, with his dark coat, big white paws, and a teddy bear face to die for! He is also one of the most expressive ferrets I have ever seen. His face has expressions that I didn't even know could be expressed on a ferret! Favorite stash items: pens, pencils, orbee bones, brushes, and glasses right off your face!
Pandora (Pan) is the stasher (will quite literally stash EVERYTHING), even if it's too big for her. Poor thing, she stashes food in their cage every time they get a fresh batch of food, but the Reks will come and eat it right afterwards! She is also sometimes nicknamed Queen Pandora because she is very dominate over us and the other floofs, and will lick lick chomp if you are holding her near your arm (she has gotten better, she used to do this to new people!). She also loves rding around on my shoulder (she'll hop on when I open their cage!) She can be a real ham sometimes, but is one of the smartest ferrets ever (constantly testing the ferret proofness and figures out how to do anything she sets her mind too!) Favorite stash items: my small purse, food, tampons, and toilet paper holder (the thing that has a spring inside).
If you guys don't know already, I'm a vet tech working at an allopathic/western medicine veterinarian who doesn't support raw or whole prey in any way. She doesn't want to admit our ferrets are WAY healthier than the ones she sees coming in. To top it off, she comes to me if she has a question about ferrets! Also, my boyfriend Derek (whom I've been with for 5 1/2 years) loves our ferrets so much. He is such a sweetheart, and loves how much I know about animals. He fully supports feeding naturally because it makes sense, and he sees the difference (especially the poop smell he says!). We actually got our ferrets together. You will often times find him going and grabbing a sleepy one, and curling into bed with them. The only thing he's iffy about is whole prey. I think it just freaks him out! He was wary at first of feeding this way, but now he wouldn't ever go back to kibble, even if we were to ever get a dog or cat! (I'm proud) I'm planning on going back to college (I was an anthropology major for 2 years, but took a break to find my real passion which is animals!) for either animal biology, zoology, or nutrition. When Derek starts teaching (he's working on his certificate, graduated with a BA in English this summer!). He said he will be making enough to support me through the rest of college.
9. How often during the week do you have access to a computer?
I'm on the computer almost all the time. Even at work, I usually have time to pop in for a sec to check emails, forums, etc. I'm a PC gamer, so yes!
10. Please post a picture of each of your ferrets (if possible).
Although I have trouble taking pictures of our ferrets (Derek is much better than this!), I took a few just so you get an idea of how they look. I had to distract them with treats, but I don't think the pics do them justice. They are cute in different ways and it's hard to show their personalities in the pics I took. Now, the USB isn't working for our camera, and I spent an hour trying to get a least a few good pics of them. I will have to post them later!
