Thank you for the advice Heather. I really appreciate it.
She's eating the squash/chicken like a champ! She's chowing down about three heaping spoonfuls every four hours. She's chewing and swallowing the little pieces of chicken which makes me very hopeful. Saw two poops yesterday. The first one was enormous and the second was much more normal sized. Still a few seeds coming out.
Gave her a nice soak in an oatmeal bath and got that cedar stink off of her.
I find it difficult to believe that this family truly thought that she looked healthy. They are going to be in for a huge shock when I send them pics of her in a month or so. She's going to look like a whole new ferret.

We've decided to name her Katrinka. New life, new name.
She has been eating big, pooping big and sleeping big. I expect she'll need lots of sleep to let her body heal.
Her fur is so, so coarse and dry it breaks my heart to touch it. And, I don't know if this is possible, but she seems to not be producing any skin oils. Not yet at least. She has no smell. I can't even get the slightest whiff of ferret from her.

She's going to be beautiful when she's recovered don't you worry.
I'll be keeping you and your new addition in my thoughts for good health and good recovery.

Her body can't produce oils because she doesn't have any to spare. Her previous diet wouldn't allow it. Don't be surprised when she does start producing oils that she may produce too much and smell really fertish. I would maybe try to give her some marine fish oil or salmon oils. This would also help her body heal. ciao

I was thinking of adding some fish oil. What dose do you think? I have 1200mg capsules/360mg total O3 fatty acids.

In happier news... Last night was the first time she really played like a young ferret should. No more stumbling. She was running, jumping and dooking like crazy for a good 30-45 minutes. Her breathing has also improved. Her belly feels more firm and is rounding out a bit. She would really like to catch our cat, Gordie and was making the silliest attempts at jumping up on the leather couch.
I'm hopeful that she can recover from this.
Do you think there's any benefit in trying to find out how long it's been since the previous owners gave her kibble? They may tell me if I ask.

Knowing would be nice, but not really essential in the grand scheme of things (what's done is done, you can't change it). I've found that you cannot turn the clock back but you can make a difference with the now. It might help when talking to the vet but just knowing that was what she was fed is enough really. Loki was fed cocoa puffs...how long I have no idea (I know approx how long he stayed with his owner, from the time he was placed from the first shelter to the time he found his way to my shelter) is that part of his diet why he's in renal failure now, I don't know. I'm sure it didn't help but knowing doesn't change what is happening now. ciao

I know I'm a million years late on this, but I am happy to hear you have expanded your family after the sad passing of little Ghia. I know you will bring much love and care to your new addition. How sad that she came from such terrible circumstances, but how wonderful that she's found a loving home with you. You have a big heart, Luci.

Thanks Giuli.
She has gained three ounces since she has been here already! She's going to be a big girl. She's 2 lb 1 oz now and I think she could still fill out a bit. She will still be eating cooked meat for a couple more weeks on the advice of Heather and my vet. I can't wait to get her going on raw!

I really enjoyed reading about what you are doing with Skittles. She is gorgeous and it breaks my heart to read about the food. There is so much information on the internet, how could anyone possibly think that would be a good diet for a ferret??? I am constantly amazed. I will be eager to hear how she progresses.
