so this is week 2 of molson's going raw
at first he wouldnt eat anything if it was too big of a chunk of if it had bones. all he ate was beef chunks and chicken chunks
then he discovered yummy chicken gizzards! (which i gave him in small pieces) and this wed.(organ day lol) i gave him a big piece instead of many small pieces and he tore it apart and ate it up! which he didnt do before so now i can just give him bigger beef chunks too so he tears all taht apart! which is helping for the bone eating
everytime i gave him something on a bone he would like it and thats it.i got tired of wasting food so i decided to smash that stuff up into baby food(which by the way he loves!!!) and so the bones and the cartilage and the meat and muscles just got all smushed together and he seems to really like it! all though there were left overs and im not quite sure if he had any of the bones yet.
i gave him some more this morning but hes out of his cage and sleeping next to my feet right now so i dont know if hes eating bones lol. ill see when i come home from work tonight!

Yay! looks good. The only thing I can add is that gizzards (and heart) arent technically organ. Liver, kidney, lung, pancreas, and spleen are organs though. You might have trouble finding most of those in a local grocery store, but at the very least be sure to feed chicken liver 1x per week (this shouldnt be TOO hard to find, many grocery stores carry it). If you can find kidney GREAT! If not, that is okay. You can keep feeding gizzards (that's totally fine) just count them as a "bonless muscle meat". Here are some new meats to have Molson try: 1. Chicken liver (if he hasnt already) 2. Chicken hearts (or strips of beef heart) 3. Boneless chunks of Pork, Turkey, or Lamb (pick one or all) 4. Pork neck segments and/or Turkey neck segements Pick one (or all) of those foods and see if he likes it. In a raw diet, the key is variety. I reccommend that people feed atleast 3 different types of meat per week. Sounds like things are going well. Dont worry, he'll be eating whole bones before you know it! Im glad he's eating the crushed bones though, that is good progress for now Keep us posted! You are almost "fully converted" oh I am so excited!

ok i was so sure i had posted a reply to this...
anyways i was gonna say i knwo i can get some chicken hearts for sure so tahts no problem and it would count as the organ right? and by 3 different kinds of meat do you mean 3 different animals? cause i have lamb (w. bones for bone day lol) chicken wings (also bone days) chicken gizzards (which i know now to take hearts instead for organ day) beef chunks and chicken necks\backs for bone day also. so theres 3 different kinds of animal in there...is that ok?

Heart isnt technically an organ "if it doesnt secrete, feed it as meat" The heart pumps blood so count it as a boneless muscle meat (chicken). Liver, lung, kideny, pancreas, spleen are all organs. Try and find liver and kidney, but at the VERY least feed liver 1x per week as your organ. Lamb, Beef, and chicken, yup looks like you've got three meats there (feel free to mix it up and add turkey one week or maybe feed pork instead of lamb, etc) Lamb bones *might* be too dense for Molson to chew through. I would just count lamb as a boneless meal. Chicken wings are good for bone days, as are chicken necks. Backs are SUPER boney, I would feed chicken LEGS instead (more meat on there ). Be sure that when you are feeding beef, lamb, and chicken that you mix up the parts that you feed. Dont always feed chicken wings, or the same cut of lamb or beef. since i have 3 diff. bone meats (2 chicken 1 lamb) i switch which i give him throughout the week. molson has eaten lamb, im not sure if he had some bones though since like i said i smashed it allll up together to a point where you dont know whats what. im running out of meat though so i need to go get more lol.. what does the liver do though?

Its a good source of vitamin A, but you have to be careful because you can go overboard and feed too much (which would lead to vitamin A toxicity) that is why you only give one per week Also, according to hare-today.com Livers are a good source of: Thiamin, Zinc and Manganese, and a very good source of Protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Vitamin B12, Pantothenic Acid, Iron, Phosphorus, Copper and Selenium.

he loves chicken hearts apperently ...and chicken blood lol. hes been eating a bit of bone.not a lot though. i bought chicken wings,which are really big,and they have like that bone that randomly points out, he chews all that off.besides that theres nothing new really. hes still pig headed lol

There are three segments to the bone: the tip (cartalidge) the middle (two bones) and the end (one bone) Does he eat the very end part of the wing? and the cartalidge tip? What about the middle section of the wing?
Im glad he likes chicken heart, those are high in taurine (good for ferret eye, brain, and heart health).
So is he still eating beef chunks? What about lamb? Has he tried lamb yet?

It's great that he's eating bone...that' probably the most difficult part of the final phase for switching! Cornish game hens have smaller bones, so you maywant to try one. I posted recipe for the fake prey - my kids love those silly recipes ---- it's like getting the treat inside the box of Cracker Jacks That really helped my kids with eating chunks of meat with bone and organs...they love these littlle packages ince my husband won't let me keep frozen animals in the fridge. another thing to try....cut some meat off the bones before you server the meaty bones. Give them the bone with less meat first since once they're half-full, they get lazy about eating bone when they're first learning. Once they've eaten a good amount of bone, reward them with the some of the remaining boneless meat! -jennifer

the pieces he ate off the chicken wing (its not like the shape of a chicken winglike the ones you order at restaurants lol theyre bigger and odd shaped) has a bone and a tiny bit of cartilage...its very thin so thats probly why he eats only that..he just chows on it like a dog bone til its all gone.

oh and im out of beef chunks but he sitll very much loves those. it barely gets into his cage hes already eating it lol. hes eaten a bit of lamb off of a lamb bone.

WAY TO GO MOLSON!!!!! Molsen will need some organ meats as well. chicken liver and gizzards a pretty easy to find, and most ferrets learn to love them pretty quickly!!! Keep up the good work woth the variety.

Just wanted to see how things were going with Molson. Has he graduated to bone crunching yet? Also, if you could give me a quick list of all the foods he's eaten that would be great. You are getting close to "graduating" and us reviewing your feeding schedule (not just yet, but soon ) Im really proud of you for sticking with this even when things got hard when Molson wouldnt eat bone. Go Molson!

ok so i went back to the grocery store and bought molson a lot of stuff! unfportunatly i think we had a lil set back since i was short on money i had to rely on my back up kibbles...) i bought molson
porc meat &beef meat to serve as the chunks chicken necks(which i got free from a butcher..theyre surprisingly meatier than the ones from the grocery store!) and chicken wings (which i had a blast cuttying into 3 pieces since i never found any wingettes anywhere) for bone days and found some chicken liver for organ day. is tthat ok?
molson chews a bit on the bones but not too much...im gona have to be a lil more strict on him bout his feeding lol. cause at first he didnt eat the chicken wing i gave him back on his first day of bones and he didnt eat it so i gave him a bit of kibbles and baby food and teh next day i think we wwas waiting to get the same thing again lol so ill get back to straining him on the kibbles lol.
sorry i havent updated in so long. i got a new work schedule and im trying to get used to it. so i guess molson fell back a grade lol but ive got enough meat to last me a loonnnng time now so we should b good!
