So as you all know I am getting VERY close to being ready for Koda to have a cagemate. I want to wait until I get back from visiting my parents for the holidays, but if the right one comes along before then , well they will just have to come home with me. As many of you also know, I saw the cutest little boy at the store the other day He is a carbon copy of Kiwi - pretty much my favorite ferret on the forum color-wise. He is tempting...very tempting...the name Sitka would fit him so well, and compliment Koda nicely... Anyways, I have been pretty set on getting a silver girl. I think the high energy of a female would be good to match Koda's rambunctiousness. But I also don't want 2 destructos. I want them to tire each other out instead. If they get into trouble, not a huge deal, as long as they keep each other from eating and chewing and digging holes in things. Koda especially! So, with that in mind, and with what you all know about Koda's personality, do you think he would benefit most from a little brother, or a little sister?

I really think either would benefit him-it's really you that has to take care of him/her in the end, and Koda will probably love either one that you choose. Little girls have such different personalities than boys-it's really amazing to see the difference, and I am glad that I have at least one girl to balance out the amount of boys I have. In my opinion, each has their benefits as well as downfalls. My boys tend to be partners in crime-and they don't love giving kisses. But they tend to be more cuddly overall. Shiloh loves kisses, attention, but doesn't love to be held for long periods. She is very rambunctious but she with that energy comes a more destructive nature-and as I said in an earlier thread-when a lady ferret decides she wants to do something, she does it, gosh darn it. One great thing is, she tends to be able to hold her own in a fight; she doesn't have the weight to best them, but the sheer determined will to do it. Both are amazing choices, in my opinion. Each is a different dynamic, but whatever you chose, you won't be sorry.

My boys play a lot rougher with each other than they do with the girls. The boys are big and they adore pounding the crap out of each other. Later, they're cuddling together in a hammock. But when Tomichi gets her hackles up ....look out!!!! she's the queen bee, and she rules the roost!Kachina's the little princess - she can dish it out, but she can't take it - LOL!!!!!
SO, f Koda is rough and tough when he plays, he may want a ferret his own size to wrestle with. It's really tough to say ---- Koda seems very gregarious, so I think he would love any ferret that he could play and snuggle with!

Well said. Koda's not going to care as long as he gets along with his new playmate. Gender brings with it different dynamics, that's all. Pooka my senior citizen, was probably a real firecracker when she was younger. She's a real fighter, enjoys a good wrestle, hates all the other inhabitants in the house, chases cats and dogs, is very independent...gives awesome kisses. Ladies Sprite and Natasha are real go-getters. Both run hard with the boys, give as good as they get. Sprite gives awesome kisses, Natasha bites (deafie). Calypso is too sick to give to much trouble to anyone, but despite being sick, doesn't like to snuggle much. She will lie in your arms for a bit but then she's off and trundling. Then there's Lady "B" Itchy.....what can I say about my nasty little Queen "B". She's getting older, so allows herself to be held longer than she used to but will still take the best of them, rules with an iron paw and tolerates no one and I mean no one in her sleep space (she doesn't have one in particular, it just happens to be the one that comes prewarmed by a male ferret who must surrender that spot or feel her wrath : Lady "B" gave her heart to her first cagemate, Attila...when he passes he stole a piece of her heart and she's never been quite the same since. The boys are for the most part real loves. They snuggle, play and romp. They get into trouble without purpose (the girls get into trouble only because they do so with purpose). The boys do it for the thrill and will take their lumps. The girls will do it because they plan to get something out of it and they don't like to be told what they can and cannot do. Either gender would give your boy a good playmate. My only concern is that you're putting colour as a large part of your choice plan. I would be more concerned with creating a personality match between the 2 little ones. Silvers over here have a tendency to live shorter lives and are often deaf, it's all about creating a special colour. I love silvers but have had no luck with keeping them to a decent age. Lady "B" is my longest living silver at 6 yrs. Good luck, I hope that you find Koda a new friend and that things work out for you. ciao

...I think Koda is secretly a female! Hmmm....from the sounds of it, maybe a male would be better? The idea is to cut down on the trouble making, not double it! I want them to distract each other. Obviously there will still be some degree of trouble making on both ends, but I don't want double-destructo! :S *thinks hard* I really wanted a female, to have a little of both worlds, but I mean, I also don't want to increase my trouble load - again, trouble referring to eating and destroying things... If females are typically destructive, maybe I will look for a male after all...? Trouble, I can handle, destruction and more blockage surgeries, I cannot! And Heather, Yes, I do want a silver, I absolutely adore them and think they are gorgeous. But you are correct - personality is key! I want to find the best combination of both, and if the color isn't quite what I wanted when I find "The One," then oh well. I wanted a black sable when I was looking for Koda. Obviously he isn't a black sable! haha But when I met him I knew. So, while I do have something in mind that I would like color-wise, I am not limiting myself either necessarily. Though it also functions to make it easier for me to wait until after Christmas time...because Silvers (ESP silver females) are few and far between up here. So when my roommate assures me that there are no silver females in at the pet store, I am less likely to make up an errand that I "absolutely need" to go to the pet store for, and just happen to stop and spend an hour investigating , oogling, and playing with the adorable baby ferrets in the cage...

Brady and Jack play soooo rough with eachother and LOVE it. I can't imagine a little delicate female standing up to the kind of playing Koda would love to engage in.

Then you should see a couple of my females, jacksmamma They hold their own with the biggest of the boys. In fact, one of my adrenal females basically beat the crap out of, and dragged all the way into the kitchen(screaming at him the whole way), one of the males who thought he could dominate her Poor lad really didn't even know what hit him!

That's funny Sherrylynne! I guess I haven't met the right ladies. I'm pretty partial to my snugly boys

Yes, my lady certainly isn't 'delicate' when it comes to fighting. I have seen her, all 1.75 pounds of her, drag my over 3 pound boy Oz around like it was just another chore. I love my snuggly boys as well-but I love my little spitfire so much. The great thing though, Katt, is that if you get a girl, they probably won't have the patience for eating stuff they're not supposed to have. Oz sometimes tries to go off into a corner to chew on clothes until I catch him, but Shiloh is always off and doing stuff. Her bane really seems to be digging at doors, but she isn't destructive other than that. But oh my goodness, she does it as hard as she can until I scruff her, and until she loses interest with it, because she always goes right back to digging no matter how much I scruff her. At least, she only has picked one door to dig at and I know exactly why. Our room mate plays with them a lot with me, and he is behind that door.

Delicate....little girl ferrets Obviously never met my crew Those little things pound for pound are far nastier than the boys will ever dream of being. Believe me when you say for a good pounding they can certainly give it. Lady "B" presently lives with 2 boys....Odin and Thor. She keeps them comfortably in line. She used to live with Attila (the love of her life, my son likened the relationship to the steriotypical....Lady "B" with curlers and a rolling pin and Attila huge monster of a henpecked hubby ), Mayhem, Mad Max, Ghenghis, Napoleon and Porthos. Loki, Odin and Thor moved in with her after Attila passed on (she took a shine to Odin). If she wanted space all she had to do is flip them and scream. She was the queen of the gator roll. She thought nothing of flipping Attila (just under 5 lbs....he was a big boy) and dragging him down the hall. There's always the incident where she and Attila were having a screaming match (both were deafies) she finally stomped her feet, gator rolled Attila, and hauled him down the hall (screaming all the way) with his 4 feet flailing in the air. She then tried to stuff him in the tube, but he didn't fit so she really lost it at that point and repeatedly bounced his head off the opening of the tube. Now, to her credit, she's no half pint. She almost 3 lbs of nasty female. She's actually 2 oz heavier than Odin (this is one of the reasons she's not allowed to play with my tiny little marshals girls....she'd kill them). Lady Natasha is Lady "B"'s doppelganger in every way except size. Lady Natasha is my tiniest fuzz. She weighs less than a pound and like Lady "B" gives the boys a total run for their money. She has no problem running and holding her own in a run in. Her playmates are Captain Jack, Fun-Go and Boris. They give her no quarter and she gives nothing in return. No, the little girls are feisty little pieces and you don't have to worry about them in play. ciao

You are all terrible. Time to visit Pet Co. I hope he is still there, but part of me almost hopes he is not. I'll be sad, but it would make my decision easy. Time to go!
