I need to post some pictures of his belly sometime haha But Koda is doing very well. He's passed his ten day mark (antibiotics) and is up to eating solid foods (no bone yet). The sutures are healing VERY well and he has some little hairs coming in! I have a few questions though: mustelidmusk - you were very correct that he smells different. He seems to be really smelly to me - normally he smells really good, kind of sweet and a little furry. lol Now he smells...musky and dirty and just strange. More like a kibble fed ferret. lol I know a big part of it is the healing, and I am sure the change in diet (all mush no bones) hasn't helped. He feels really oily to me too. After I touch him I feel like I need to wash my hands. When is it ok to give him a bath? He NEEDS one, probably a nice oatmeal soak. He is done with the antibiotics, and most of he scab on the suture is off or coming off and underneath it is healing nicely. And he is getting back on his normal diet. I REALLY want to bathe him soon and wash all of his bedding and such to get rid of the stink. When is it ok? Also, when can I put normal litter back in? When can I put bone back in his diet? Thanks guys!

When are you supposed to take him in to the vet for his post surgery check up? These are questions that you need to put to your vet. ciao

No Post- surgery check up. The stitches will dissolve they called me the other day to check in and be sure everything was going ok. He is eating and pooping and the suture is almost completely healed. There is one little spot that has some scab left and the whole area looks very clean and pink (the color of the rest of his skin pink, not inflamed pink or anything) and healthy. His energy level is normal, behavior normal, and his fur is coming in. I worked all day until the vets closed Friday and Saturday, they were closed Sunday, and today I had tests and class until they were closed, so I couldn't call. I figured in the meanwhile here was a good place to check. I do intend to call and ask though. I need to return their carrier that I borrowed anyways lol so I will probably just go in. I have some updated pics for you guys too. His belly is looking REALLY good!

I would be tempted to start to return things to normal. Do it slowly so that if there is a set back you know exactly what it is. Internals take slower to heal than what you see on the outside. I would want to hear from someone who's had ferrets who've had blockage surgery before telling you to go back to feeding bone (either that or the vet's say so) I would be tempted to return to the whole bone thing but I honestly don't have any experience with it so wouldn't want to tell you to. Either sherrylynne or Jennifer might be good candidates for a pm if they don't pop in here in a timely fashion. Sherrylynne's computer is in surgery right now so she's only got limited access ciao

Actually, Lucrezia passed her blockage after being at the vet's overnight, so didn't need surgery, thank heavens! Even so, I think I'd give it at least another week, and maybe start by introducing a smallish amount of powdered eggshell, and increase daily for a week to a normal amount. Then I'd look at adding some bone. I can only go by people who've had bowel surgery, but they're kept on a soft diet until the bowel is healed up enough not to rupture by too firm a stool passing through it. Almost forgot- no getting the incision wet until it's completely healed!

Oh yes, and do you see that little circle of 6 bumps around his "belly button?" Are those his little boy nipples? There are 6 in a perfect circle (or hexagon rather) perfectly spaced around it. I know they aren't razor burn bumps or anything because they are still there....

I realized I don't have any pictures of myself lol but that is my adorable bf snuggling with him on the bottom. I love that picture...my two babies. haha Both equally spoiled rotten and equally loved. They just look like they are whispering secrets to each other planning something mischievous... Koda is totally healed and his belly fur is back. It is still a little shorter than all of the rest, but it is beginning to blend in. Again I think you all for all of your understanding, help, and moral (and factual) support.

YAY!!!!! I'm so glad everything worked out so well. I'm always so amazed at how quickly a body can heal itself. Those incisions that look all raised and folded over look so awful at first. It's so amazing that they heal up quite nicely over time. Koda's incision site will continue to fade over time as well. Even thought he's completed recovered, he'll continue healing for quite some time. I know that a major surgery takes about a year for a person to heal according to all the doctors. I suspect ferrets heal faster (faster metabolism). but Koda will be regaining strength and working on that scar for months. As always, continue to feed him well and give him lots of hugs and kisses! -jennifer

Thanks! haha Hugs and kisses he is not lacking! No worries there! Already you cannot even see the incision. I think that it really helps that he is still so young. I don't know what I would have done if I lost my little buddy. We have had him less than a year and already Koda has made such a huge impact on both Shane and I's lives. We both absolutely adore him! haha Shane even said that if anything similar ever happened again (which we are obviously hoping will not) that he would be "obligated to help pay for the surgery" because he loves Koda so much. lol It was much cuter if you were there to see the context and the way he worded it. lol He is the center of our little universe///other than school that is!

I'm so glad he's healed up so well! And I do know what you went through with that, even though Lucrezia finally passed her's(with a little help from LOTS of lax and pumpkin!). It's really scary, and I'm glad it's finally over That was a cute card to give the vet, by the way!
