I have a 6 year old female who has had insulinoma for quite a while. She has been stable on prednisone. Several weeks ago she started having diarrhea, which at first didn't alarm me because she has bouts of irritable bowel. The diarrhea continued and progressed so I took her in for a check up. Her glucose level was low so her pred dose was increased and she was started on Flagyl and carafate. They gave her SQ fluids. Blood work results came back today and 3 out of the 4 liver enzymes are extremely elevated. The doc has added clavimox. Her stool has already improved but I'm very concerned about her liver and I was wondering if anyone has used milk thistle as a therapy for liver disease in ferrets?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated also.

Thanks!

I personally would not mess with milk thistle and pred. unless without the involvement of a ferret-knowledgeable integrative meds. vet. Milk thistle can affect the way meds are metabiolized. They can make the effects of a medicine stronger or weaker. I ***Think*** it might block the prednisone to some degree, but I may be remembering this incorrectly.

For the pred... are you giving prednisone or prednisolone??? prednisone breaks down into prednisolone, so it'supposed to be easier on the liver.

There is another option instead of Pred. Proglycem can be used for insulinomas in ferrets. I've never used it, but I'd be looking into this on the Ferret Health List arrchives and posting some questions there. There may even be something about milk thistle and pred.

As another possible resource....
My integrative meds. vet does do email and/or phone consultations. He would be qualified to answer your question on the milk thistle with pred. If you decide to check this out, have all your blood work and diagnostic info. lined up so you can send it to him. Here is the web page: www.wellvet.com
