First of all I'm new to the boards, and don't have a ferret yet, but just trying to prepare myself. Does anyone have a list of "needed" or "recommended" items to have before starting your ferret on a raw food diet? I have been a vegetarian ever since I was old enough to cook my own meals and know nothing about meat really. Do you guys have a seperate blender specifically for making raw soups or what do you use? I suppose I should buy a seperate cutting board and maybe a food scale to weigh meat. What else do I need? Also, if anyone has created a sample page of what your ferret eats in one weeks time, could you send me the link? I will be honest this is going to be REALLY hard for me to do, as the reason I don't eat meat is I think it's disgusting in all ways. I don't know if I will ever be able to stomach feeding raw prey but am hoping raw meat is still better than kibble. From what I have read I just wouldn't feel comfortable feeding my ferret a kibble based diet anymore. I'm probably going to need some help once I bring a ferret home. EDIT: I just realized this probably should have been put into "newbie questions" if anyone wants to move the thread for me. Sorry

Good for you for doing all your research, and in trying to overcome what must be a very difficult thing for you! We do have some vegetarians here on the board, and one of our mentors is also Not sure where it(list) would be, so here are some items off the top of my head. Kitchen scale Kitchen shears(for cutting chicken, etc.) Large chef's knife Cleaver(I use this for turkey necks) Blender(they will be sterilized in the dishwasher) Ice cube trays Baggies Feeding den, if you choose to use one(most just use a pop can box, and toss it when grungy ) And ask all the questions you want! That's what we're here for

I'm a vegetarian too so I know how lost you must feel right now LOL. It was such a strange feeling to be shopping for and getting excited over meat. You'll get used to it. Good luck!

Yea I will need to buy a cleaver, don't own of those. hehe. Thanks for listing some items. I am starting to make a list of all the things I need to buy before I can get a ferret. So far all I have bought is the cage. My friend was selling her 2 story critter nation she was using for her ratties, so I got a good deal.
Glad to see I'm not the only vegetarian. At least I know if other vegs can feed raw I can do it too. While raw prey really "grosses" me out at this point I would eventually like to feed it, but starting out with just raw will be a start.
Anyways, I'm off to read more! This forum is very helpful, with tons of info.

I am also a vegetarian, and while I have no problem being elbow deep in meat for my ferrets and cats, I know some vegetarians would. For this reason I believe the commercial raw diets and even freeze dried diets are good, because there is no prep work. Especially if you can get the freeze dried raw, than it's like feeding kibble but infinitely more healthy. I'd still want to feed chicken necks just to clean their teeth though.
