I am planning on building my ferrets a new cage, as I can't find one that is big enough and easy to clean, plus I erally like the idea of being able to customize their living space. I own 5 ferrets currently, but that number does fluctuate as I occansionally take in ferrets no one wants. I only have one thing so far -Linoleum base with at leat a 3 or 4 inch lip So what are your must haves in a homemade cage? What do you like about your cage (DIY or store bought) and what do you not like? Thanks!  |

Ease of access for cleaning. This has to be the biggest right here. Being able to clean, get into clean every corner, to change bedding, move litter boxes...whatever.
Versatility of use, easy to make larger or smaller as need be.
Safety....even the ferret nation, which has to be one of the nicest cages so far on the market has safety issues.
My homemade cages are single level with the possibility of expanding out to the sides instead of up and down, 6 screws and I can double even triple the size of my cages. I have a lot of seniors who have difficulty dealing with the tight steep stairs on most of the cage designs, so I removed the levels. They still can have hammies and all that neat stuff but it's all on one level. It means that any of my cages can be turned into hospital cages or isolation cages as needed.

Thanks! I never would have thought about making it a single level, but it makes sense. I have seniors as well (two of my girls are almost 10), they don't have issues with the levels but in case they ever do. Any materials that are better then others? I was thinking wood, but wood holds in smells.

I use heavily lacquered wood. I actually dismantled my Midwest cages, using the caging components, removing floors, shelves and adding hinges so that I can actually have 2 levels of cages but the whole front hinges open so that I can clean with ease (something you can't do with the midwest). With 6 screws I can remove the sides to expand the cages and double and triple them up. I can actually make them so that I have a 2 level cage that runs the full length of the ferret room.
